At the time of the recording, numerous artists commented on the process, the 1985 version of the song, and co-writer Michael Jackson. R&B singer Jordin Sparks revealed that, despite having been born after the release of the original, the song had a "huge impact" on her.[18] Celine Dion said that the release of the song would not only benefit the Haitian people, but also serve as a remembrance of "the passion [Michael] Jackson had for helping those in need".[18] Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones echoed Dion's sentiments and further explained that if the singer were alive, he would have wanted to be just as involved as he had been a quarter of a century ago.[18] According to Phillips, there was a "handful" of musicians who either declined or could not rearrange their schedules for the song's recording, including country singer Taylor Swift,[13] who was going to be touring in Australia.[19]

The Salvation Army, which has maintained a longstanding presence in Haiti for more than 65 years, is providing water and emergency supplies to survivors of Hurricane Matthew in the immediate aftermath of the storm. UCHI was created after an April 2010 meeting at UCSF of more than 200 UC students, faculty, staff and others interested in helping rebuild Haiti. Among the meeting organizers was Tu Tran, who then was a UC Berkeley student.

"There are guys here who just hit the ground and they're already helping," said Capt. Jason Alexander, commander of A Battery, 2nd Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd BCT. "I think that's indicative of the 82nd."

"The Falcons are reaching and helping the people of Haiti as fast as resources become available, and we are doing everything possible to speed the process," said Lt. Col. Tim Kehoe, 2nd BCT deputy commander.

"It is extremely devastating, just now, I landed at one of the hospitals that we support that we're helping with and coordinating evacuations, hospitals are overwhelmed and hospitals like ours need to be available to take the overflow of patients," he said. "I found a 14-year-old boy in a hospital with his father, [their] house collapsed, his father had lost all four of his children, and his wife and this was his only surviving child. We were able to get him on a Coast Guard helicopter, evacuated, and into a hospital facility. It's been very, very difficult." 2ff7e9595c
